Text Box: March

Rather than choosing the obvious candidate – David – I’ve chosen another ancient Celtic figure with a specific relevance to this area:

Woolos / Gwynllyw

29th March

Son of King Glywys, whose kingdom of Glywysing stretched from eastern Carmarthenshire to Gwent. Was a fearsome warrior in his youth; married Gwladys, daughter of Brychan Brycheiniog; their son was Cadoc, one of the holiest of the Welsh Saints (and who has many churches dedicated to him in this area. Founded a church on the site of the present Cathedral on Stow Hill in Newport, after seeing a vision. He and his wife are said to have settled in a nearby hill-fort (the location of which is not known), spending the rest of their days devoutly ‘enjoying the fruits of their labour, and taking nothing which belonged to other persons.

King of kings and Lord of lords,
From whom all authority on earth takes its name:
Grant that those who revere the name of your servant Woolos
May claim the crown of un fading glory;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord
To who with you and the Holy Spirit
be all honour and glory now and for ever.
