Bellringers

All the churches in the benefice have bells, but only those in Llangybi and Tredunnock can be used for change ringing.

The Llangybi tower holds eight bells, Tredunnock six, Llanbadoc three and Coed y Paen just one.

There are not enough active ringers in the community to ring the bells without help from visitors, but there is usually a practice in Tredunnock on Friday evenings, from 7:30 until 9:00pm.

The bells can be rung for Weddings by request; for more information see below.

 Wedding Bells in Llangybi

The Bells:

There is a ring of eight bells in Llangybi Church, and we would be delighted to ring them to help celebrate your marriage.  Our church has a “ground floor ring”.  This means that the ringers block the main entrance of the church while they make their joyful noise.  It is not safe to walk through them while they are ringing and so we ask the congregation to use the vestry entrance.

There are usually pauses during the ringing when the congregation can use the main entrance.  In this case it is important for the ushers to act as “gatekeepers”, and to explain why guests cannot go straight in.

The normal practice is to start ringing half an hour before the wedding. The bells will stop as the bridal party starts to walk down the path to the main entrance.  After the wedding the bride, groom and immediate family will exit through the main entrance, and the doors will be closed.  The ringing will start as the rest of the congregation leave through the vestry, and will continue for about fifteen minutes.

 The cost:

We ask for £10 per bell to ring before or after your wedding.  (Of this £5 goes to the ringer, and £5 goes to the bell fund to cover maintenance costs).  If you would like the bells before and after your wedding the charge will be £15 per bell, as it takes another hour of the ringers’ time. We will normally book six or eight ringers (eight bells sound better!). The cost will be between £60 and £120 depending on your choice.
